Service
The service arm of Project Horseshoe Farm will have a very strong social entrepreneurial bent and spirit, and will be largely driven and staffed by Horseshoe Farm Fellows and community volunteers. Initially the focus of our service will be on housing programs for adults, including the elderly, with mental disabilities, and on mentorship, activities, and academic enrichment programs for children.
Adults, Including the Elderly, with Mental Disabilities
A portion of Project Horseshoe Farm’s campus will be devoted to enhanced independent living housing that will be made available to adults, including the elderly, with mental disabilities. The housing program will focus on improving the quality of life of residents by pairing stable housing with the companionship of Horseshoe Farm Fellows and community volunteers.*
*Because we are not an assisted living facility, we can not take residents who are in need of assistance with activities of daily living.
Children
We will be looking to refine and improve an after school tutoring, mentoring, and activities program that was initiated in partnership with Greensboro West Elementary School in the spring of 2007. The program currently serves approximately thirty 4th-6th grade students and is staffed by students from The University of Alabama’s School of Social Work and from the University’s Honors and Blount Colleges, as well as from Auburn University’s Rural Studio Architecture Program. In the longer term, we hope to develop additional mentoring, activities, and academic enrichment programs for children.**
**As we launch Project Horseshoe Farm, the services we will be able to provide will depend to a degree on available time and resources. As we begin, our first priority will be initiating the enhanced independent living housing program. We will initiate and run other programs as time and resources permit.
