Service

The service arm of Project Horseshoe Farm has a very strong social entrepreneurial bent and spirit, and is largely driven and staffed by Horseshoe Farm Fellows and other community volunteers. The focus of our service is on programs for adults with mental disorders and on youth mentorship, activities, and academic enrichment programs.

Enhanced Independent Living for Women with Mental Disorders
A beautifully restored Victorian Farmhouse on a portion of the Project Horseshoe Farm campus is devoted to an enhanced independent living housing program for women 50 years old and older who are diagnosed with mental disorders. Launched in 2009, the program seeks to improve the quality of life of residents and to help residents achieve their goals. It does this by providing a stable living environment, companionship of other residents, support and companionship from Horseshoe Farm Fellows and other community volunteers, and support in becoming meaningfully involved in the local community.

Youth Programs
Working closely and in partnership with principals and teachers of Greensboro Elementary School and Greensboro Middle School, Project Horseshoe Farm offers two weekly school-based after school tutoring, mentoring, and activities programs for children in our community. We offer one program for 5th grade students and one for middle school students. The programs now serve approximately 60 students with more than 25 regular volunteers. Each volunteer works with a small group of students over the course of the year to provide mentorship, promote character development, and improve academic achievement in math.

Community Clubhouse
Located in the former Western Auto Building on Main Street and launched in January of 2012, the Community Clubhouse is the hub of many of Project Horseshoe Farm’s service and other activities. During the day, the Clubhouse serves as a safe and welcoming place with programs and activities for the many elderly and mentally disabled members of our community including the women living in the Horseshoe Farm enhanced independent living housing program. The Clubhouse day programs are intended to help overcome the significant isolation and lack of purpose and meaning that often faces elderly and mentally disabled members of our community and to provide a place where community members can come together to help and support one another in helping these members of our community. In the afternoons, the Clubhouse shifts its focus to providing additional after school programs for children in our community including the children already involved in our school-based tutoring programs.
